Spinal Cord Injuries
Stem Cells for Disc Regeneration
The field of spinal cord injury and back pain has experienced a significant advancement in treatment. Many doctors still rely on surgery and supportive care for these conditions, but researchers are now exploring the use of mesenchymal stem cells to repair damaged tissue, transforming the approach to disc degeneration and back pain.
New mesenchymal stem cell treatments involve both intravenous and direct administration into the disc. These stem cells not only seem to be repairing the disc, but they also exert an anti-inflammatory effect, which alleviates pain and reverses disc degeneration.

What is Degenerative Disc Disease?
Degenerative Disc Disease is a condition characterized by chronic pain resulting from a damaged vertebral disc or discs. This damage can occur naturally with age or from a severe injury, leading to tears, herniation, or bulging of the disc. This exposes or irritates the nerves, causing pain commonly felt in the neck (cervical spine) and lower back (lumbar spine).
A herniated or bulging disc occurs when the annulus fibrosus (the outer layer of the disc) is damaged. This can irritate the spinal cord or nearby nerves, causing severe pain, weakness, and numbness in the arms or legs. In extreme cases, a severely herniated disc can lead to paralysis.
How Are The Stem Cells Helping?
The disc itself has very few nerve endings and low blood supply. Without a constant blood supply, the disc cannot repair itself. Our Mesenchymal Stem Cells can survive in the low oxygen environment inside the discs, enhancing the chance for long-term healing.
When administered using fluoroscopic x-ray for precise placement, stem cells can substantially reduce pain, increase function, and reduce disc bulge size. MSCs locate the damaged tissue, repair it, and create an anti-inflammatory response, improving the overall health of the disc. This anti-inflammatory response protects existing neurons. The injected stem cells start to develop into neurons that replace the damaged ones.
At Elite Care, we enhance the benefits of MSCs with our synergistic treatments, which have proven to greatly reduce inflammation.
